How to compare works

Comparison helps explain differences through visible details and context.

Key ideas

Choose a general question: how power is shown, how depth is constructed, or how material affects form. For both works, record the artist, date, technique, size, and original purpose, if known. Then apply the same criteria so that the description of one job does not substitute for comparison.

Looking deeper

Draw a conclusion from specific observations: in the first work the figure occupies almost the entire format, in the second it is lost among the objects. Then offer an explanation and indicate what information supports it. A similar motive does not prove influence: such a conclusion requires historical connections.

WHAT TO LOOK AT

Compare two portraits from museum catalogs based on the scale of the figure, direction of view, and setting.

Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.
PRACTICE LOOKING

Write down three similarities and three differences. State your conclusion in two sentences and separate the observation from the assumption.
