Key ideas

Pointed arches, rib vaults and external supports made it possible to distribute loads in a new way and expand windows. Stained glass windows not only illuminated the space, but also created a color environment with their own themes. The sculpture of the facades interacts with the architectural rhythm.

Looking deeper

Gothic is not limited to cathedrals: there are manuscripts, household objects, city buildings and easel paintings. Naturalistic details can be combined with a symbolic system. Please check your region and time before applying a generic style name.
