Impressionism
Light and the experience of modern life change the way we construct a picture.
Key ideas
The Impressionists explored visual impression, the color of shadows and the variability of lighting. Split brushstrokes and plein air were important for many, but not all works in the same way. Modern boulevards, train stations and leisure activities have become significant subjects.
Looking deeper
Monet explored the change of motif in series, Degas - movement and unusual perspective, Morisot - everyday experience and free writing. Cropping the figure and shifting the focus of attention changes the relationship with the viewer. Impressionism does not mean that the painting was painted carelessly or without preparation.
Monet, "Impression. Sunrise"; works by Morisot and Degas.
Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.Compare the same motif under different lighting conditions and notice changes in color, not just brightness.
Useful terms

- Work outdoors with direct observation of nature. Doesn't necessarily mean finishing the entire painting outside the workshop.
