Pop art: image in popular culture

Advertising, comics and product packaging become art material.

Key ideas

Pop art developed in Great Britain and the United States under different conditions. The artists were interested in recognizable images of mass culture and ways of disseminating them. Enlargement, repetition and transfer to the exhibition space changed the usual perception of a photograph, product or newspaper picture.

Looking deeper

A familiar image does not guarantee an unambiguous attitude towards consumption. Work can be both exciting and challenging. Compare the source and the work: have the size, color, signature and number of repetitions changed? Give reasons for your interpretation of these changes.

WHAT TO LOOK AT

Andy Warhol, images of Campbell's soup cans; Roy Lichtenstein, works based on comics.

Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.
PRACTICE LOOKING

Take packaging and think of two ways to display it: to sell the product and to discuss purchasing habits.
