Rococo and 18th century culture
Decorativeness, intimate scale and complex play of social roles.
Key ideas
Rococo is often associated with asymmetrical designs, light palettes, curved lines, and the interiors of the private lives of the elite. In Watteau's painting, a festive scene can combine grace with uncertainty and melancholy. Objects and premises form an ensemble.
Looking deeper
Explaining the direction only by “frivolity” is not enough. Depictions of leisure convey messages about taste, status, gender roles, and the relationship between the viewer and the characters. Not all 18th-century art is Rococo: there were other programs at the same time.
Watteau, “Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera”; Fragonard, "Swing".
