Imagination, intense experience and the limits of human control.

Key ideas

Romanticism is not a single style of writing. Artists could be interested in the elements, history, revolution, loneliness and the national past. The category of the sublime helps to describe an encounter with something that exceeds the usual scale and causes both attraction and anxiety.

Looking deeper

Turner dissolves the subject in light and movement, Friedrich builds a contemplative attitude towards space, Delacroix develops color and dramatic gesture. Don't limit the direction to depicting romantic love or just a dark mood.

WHAT TO LOOK AT

Friedrich, "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog"; Turner's seascapes.
