How to read architecture
A building is not only a facade, but also an organized experience of movement.
Key ideas
The plan shows the relationships of the rooms, the section shows the heights and arrangement of space, the facade shows the appearance. The load-bearing system answers the question of how the building is held up. Function, climate, available materials and social rules influence the decision, but do not automatically determine it.
Looking deeper
Explore the entrance, the route, the scale of the body, the light and the transitions between the public and the private. A similar external motif can hide different designs. A historic building has changed frequently: the visible form may combine several eras of construction, renovation and reuse.
Compare the plan of the Pantheon, the Gothic cathedral and the modern museum.
Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.Draw the visitor's route and mark the places where the building forces you to stop.
