Key ideas

Archaic, classical and Hellenistic sculpture solve different problems. The frontal figure of the kouros differs from classical contrapposto and dramatic Hellenistic groups. Vase paintings tell stories of myths, rituals and everyday life; the shape of the vessel is related to its use.

Looking deeper

The familiar white marble is the result of a history of preservation: many ancient sculptures were painted. We know a significant part of Greek plastic art from later Roman versions. When comparing works, check whether it is an original, a copy or a reconstruction.

WHAT TO LOOK AT

"Doriphoros" of Polykleitos, known from Roman copies; paintings of Attic vases.

Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.
PRACTICE LOOKING

Observe how the position of the supporting leg changes the tilt of the pelvis and shoulders.

Useful terms

Contrapposto
