Sculpture: mass and space

Sculpture must be seen as a physical encounter with volume.

Key ideas

During die cutting, material is removed from the block; when sculpting, the shape is increased; casting transfers the model into another material through a mold. A prefabricated sculpture connects ready-made elements. A bronze work can exist in several castings with their own history.

Looking deeper

Scale, weight, texture, voids and installation method influence the meaning. The round sculpture changes as it walks around, the relief is connected to the plane. The pedestal and museum light are not neutral: they establish distance and privileged points of view.

WHAT TO LOOK AT

Compare a marble figure, a bronze casting, and an assembled object.

Find the work in the museum's official catalog and start with a description of the visible details.
PRACTICE LOOKING

Imagine three traversal points: what opens and what disappears?

Useful terms

Texture
The nature of the surface and traces of material processing: smoothness, graininess, stroke relief and other features.
Assemblage
Volumetric combination of objects and materials. It is close to collage in its assembly principle, but goes into three-dimensional space.
Relief
A sculptural image connected to the background plane and protruding from it to different depths.
